Stream restoration returns a degraded waterway to a more stable condition by re-grading the channel, stabilizing eroded banks with rock, root wads, or live-staked native vegetation, and reestablishing riparian plant communities. The goal is a channel that carries storm flows without continuing to erode, widen, and send sediment downstream.
Yes. Stream work in Maryland requires a Waterway Construction permit from MDE and may require a Federal Section 404 permit for work in Waters of the US. Shoreline work in tidal areas requires additional MDE Wetlands and Waterways permits. Actaeon coordinates the regulatory pathway — permit applications, agency coordination, and compliance documentation — as part of the project scope.
A living shoreline stabilizes an eroding waterfront using natural materials — native marsh plants, oyster reef structures, and rock sills — rather than hard structures like bulkheads. Maryland regulations require living shoreline designs to be evaluated before hard armoring is permitted on most tidal shorelines. Living shorelines control erosion while maintaining habitat and water quality functions.
